What is Melasma?
Melasma is a common pigmentation condition that causes brown or grey-brown patches to develop on the skin, most often on the face. It occurs when melanin-producing cells become overactive, producing more pigment than the surrounding skin. It is most commonly seen on the cheeks, forehead, upper lip and chin.
Sun exposure is the most significant trigger, but hormonal changes from pregnancy, contraceptives or hormone therapy also play a major role, which is why melasma is more common in women. It can affect all skin tones but tends to be more visible in medium to darker skin.
